1) MAJ Larry J. Bauguess, Jr. ~ He grew up in Mo. Falls and died in 2007 while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom. He was killed in Pakistan while assisting a NATO mission border dispute between Afghanistan and Pakistan. While his death was curious and sad, his life is one to be celebrated and honored. He was a school classmate of mine, and his parents - John and Martha, siblings - Laura & Terry, and his widow and daughters - Wesley, Ryann & Ellie, are all truly incredible people and an honor to know. www.majlarrybauguess.org

2) Wilkes County's Fallen ~ I was working on a personal project to find and compile all the Wilkes County troops that had died while serving their country. As I don't have any veterans or service members in my family,...I don't have the contacts in the VFW to do something like this easily. So it involved me going to monuments, transcribing names, and searching National Archives. This project has been impactful for me personally, and typing these names - one by one - has in some small way honored their memory.

3) Nancy Canter ~ Nancy is a local water colorist that currently has an exhibit in the front gallery at Wilkes Art Gallery. She worked and raised her kids as a nutritionist, but now teaches and paints. When I was young, she made small, painted leather pins for sale and I remember being completely fascinated by how good she was. I put her in my little mental notebook of women who can make art for reals. (we all have She didn't even know the impact she made on my artistic development. We are all standing on the shoulders of giants,...and she's one of mine. The WAG opening is this Friday, June 1st, at 6pm. (It's free!)

4) Dunkirk ~ Just watch this already. The amazing heroism by soldiers and ordinary people alike in this film by Christopher Nolan is fantastic. I had to keep reminding myself that this is a true story in history. It's showing on HBOnow and is available on iTunes.

5) The opening of the pools ~ Memorial Day marks the official opening of the pools across our nation. My mother-in-law has one, we are YMCA members, and we are members of a neighborhood pool,...so between all of these there is BOUND to be some way to get in there and get swimming! Now if only I could buy a vat of sunscreen into which we'd dive....
